Rockies negotiating with Lopez

In his story about the Colorado Rockies agreeing to minor-league deals with Alfredo Amezaga and catcher Chad Moeller, MLB.com’s Thomas Harding reports the Rockies are negotiating with starting pitcher and former Rockie Rodrigo Lopez. Ken Rosenthal from FoxSports.com reported earlier Wednesday that the Rockies were interested in Lopez and Dave Bush as potential depth for the starting rotation.

Adding Lopez plus the acquisition of Clayton Mortenson from Oakland to go along with Esmil Rogers, Felipe Paulino and Greg Reynolds, would give the Rockies plenty of depth in the rotation.

I never really got why they didn’t keep this guy – he was good. Guess I missed something in the narrative about his leaving. A’course, now he’s several years older…

He underwent Tommy John surgery while with the Rockies. 2010 was his first full season in the majors since that happened.

Jayson Stark at ESPN.com reports Lopez will is choosing between the Rockies, Braves and Mets and could decide by the end of the week. All three teams are offering Lopez minor-league deals with invites to spring training.

Steve, I was fairly surprised to hear the Mets are listed as one of the suitors.

I’m just thinking back after the Mets signed Chris Young and Scott Hairston. Mr. Alderson was saying they were pretty much done due to serious budget contrains.

Fast forward to today. They signed Dickey to an $8M deal. Maybe they are offering huge backend incentives and considerations to Lopez?

I hope the Rockies have a shot at giving Lopez a shot. You just never know.
