The Colorado Rockies announced on their Twitter feed that the team has signed Alfredo Amezaga to a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to spring training.

Amezaga, who played two games with the Rockies in 2005, spent 2006-09 with the Florida Marlins, the first three years as a semi-regular in the lineup playing all infield and outfield positions. While he has experience all over the diamond, he has played primarily second base, shortstop and center field during his career.

The switch-hitter played briefly in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor-league system in 2010. He will compete for a utility job with the Rockies.

Could we see the Rockies make a play at a guy like Ben Sheets, or Justin Duscherer? Also who else are they looking at?

Don’t see the Rockies involved on either of those guys. Rodrigo Lopez and Dave Bush are targets.

Checked him on baseballreference, and gotta love how he’s still listed as 5’10″, 180 lbs … I think he’s been too fat to play SS for the last 3 or 4 years. I never understood why the Rox picked him up in 2005 — when he was really a good defensive SS — only to dump him after a couple games. It’s not like they had anyone better. Those were truly awful times at Coors Field. Just look at the guys who played SS that year after Barmes’ famous deer meat incident: Desi Relaford, Omar Quintanilla, Anderson Machado, Alfredo Amezega.

And in retrospect, did that club (2005 Rockies) have a lot of suspected juicers or what? Look at that guys who cratered right about that time when drug testing came in: Todd Greene, Dustan Mohr, Jorge Piedra, Larry Bigbie …
