Rockies a trade partner for Cards?

February 24, 2011 | 9:26 pm | 13

FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal writes that the Colorado Rockies could be a trade partner for the St. Louis Cardinals, who lost starting pitcher Adam Wainwright for the season and infielder Nick Punto for three months. The Rockies, Rosenthal believes, are somewhat rich in starting pitchers and infielders. No talks have taken place, just speculation on Rosenthal’s part. Read the full story here.

Rosenthal states who the Cards would be interested in on the Rockies team, but no mention of Cardinals of whom the Rocks would be interested. Any speculation on a possible fit of Cardinal players to the Rocks?

Yes, exactly Trip. What about a three way trade with Texas?

  • Steve Foster | February 25, 2011 | 9:11 am

This was just speculation by Rosenthal based on the Cardinals’ needs. If — big if — something happened here it would probably be similar to how the Rockies got Jason Hammel at the end of spring training in 2009. The Rockies needed an arm, the Rays had someone without a role, so the Rockies picked him up for a minor prospect. Could be something similar if, say, someone like Paulino, Rogers or Young doesn’t win a job in spring training. Rockies could trade depth for a prospect unless a need opened on the Rockies either through injury or someone having a bad spring. At a glance, Cardinals look a little heavy in outfielders with Holliday, Rasmus, Berkman, Jay and Craig but don’t know that I would consider them any deeper at the position than the Rockies.

Holiday’s coming back!? ;-) Hey, one can dream of Tulo, CarGo and Matt together in a batting order can’t they? lol

Not so much. Would be quite a lineup though, wouldn’t it? Either Jay and Craig look like they could be the odd man out if Berkman settles in. To be honest, I don’t think anything is going to happen here. With Cook slowed by shoulder soreness, Rockies aren’t going to trade a starting pitcher until the end of spring training if at all, and the Cardinals will need to address the loss of Wainwright before that.

Didn’t the Rockies call the Cards about Rasmus over the winter?

  • Steve Foster | February 25, 2011 | 3:28 pm

I don’t think the Cardinals ever seriously considered trading Rasmus. Whatever issues there between him and the team were resolved before the offseason.

John Anderson mentioned a 3-way trade with Texas, which while hard to pull off, seems like a better match. What about this for fun: Michael Young and $24mm to the Rockies; Cardinals send John Jay and a Top 10 prospect to Texas; EY2 and Cook/Paulino/Rogers (one of them) to Cards.

Why wouldn’t the Rockies want to “help” the Cardinals unless we get the advantage? Steve mentioned the trade where we got Hammel but he came from the AL. I would hope that any trade of a starting pitcher would only happen if we sent him to the other league.

And I really don’t think we’re that deep in the starting pitching department. Jimenez and De La Rosa are given if they stay healthy. Chacin has less than a year in the bigs, Cook has his injury history and is now on the shelf for awhile and Hammell wins 10 games (that’s it). The others.. Paulino who is coming off a terrible year, Rogers has just shown flashes, Maine coming off injuries.. etc., etc. IMO starting pitching is the most important part of a winning team. You never have enough except perhaps the Orieles of the early 70′s and the Braves of the 90′s and a few other teams.

I should have said “why would the Rockies want to help the Cardinals”

  • Rockpile | February 25, 2011 | 9:26 pm

I don’t know if I would rush into dealing away our depth to the Cards. Cook is hurt. Jason Hammel also has a pretty serious cholesterol problem, forcing him into take medication that seriously has fatigued him. Also, I hate the Cards. That would be another reason not to deal with them.

Oops. Forgot to complete that thought. The Story on the MLB site is about Jason Hammel’s cholesterol problem. I can relate.
