De La Rosa solid against M’s; Daley pushes for spot

Jorge De La Rosa pitched six solid innings Wednesday in the Colorado Rockies’ 6-5 win over the Seattle Mariners. De La Rosa, whose last outing was in a minor-league game Friday while Greg Reynolds auditioned for a spot in the rotation, allowed three runs on four hits, walked no one and struck out eight.

Matt Daley was the first reliever in the game and allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning. Daley, who has yet to allow an earned run in six innings this spring, has options remaining and could be the last reliever squeezed out of a roster spot. But if the Rockies choose to go with four starters on the roster until a fifth starter is needed April 9, Daley could find at least a temporary spot in the bullpen.

Darn, I just posted my game comments on the wrong thread. I was impressed that even though DLR went to 3-2 on several batters, he usually seemed to make his pitch and get the out.

A couple of things really impressed me last night. One was Iannetta almost throwing out a base stealer in the 3rd inning. The pitch was a slow curveball, the runner had an excellent jump (on DLR), but Iannetta threw a strike that was right on the bag and Tulo didn’t even have to move his glove for the tag. Unfortunately, because DLR was not holding the runner on close enough, the runner was safe at second. Great throw and just showed what kind of ability Iannetta has.

Spilly really impressed me with two at bats where he hit the ball to the right side (one for a hit with the bases loaded)twice during the game. If the team can execute like that then so many innings can be extended, runners moved into easier scoring positions, etc. Those were two very professional at bats by Spilly.

One other thing. Daley got out two left handed batters last night. If he can get lefties out, then he needs to be in the BP.
