Rockies acquire infielder Fields from Pirates
The Colorado Rockies acquired infielder Josh Fields from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday for a player to be named later or cash.
Fields, 28, is former first-round pick and top prospect in the Chicago White Sox organization. He hit .306 in a brief stint with the Kansas City Royals in 2010 and signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates in the offseason. In 21 spring games, he hit .176 and was reassigned to the minor-league camp last week.
Fields plays primarily first and third base, but has some experience in the outfield. He will provide depth at Triple-A, but will not be placed on the 40-man roster.

Just a primer for some other moves? Could this be the precursor for something else happening? I’ve got nothing else to do right now, so I thought I’d speculate. Thinking of a team that might need a Fields or a Jacobs type as a throw to sweeten the pot on a bigger deal.
Don’t really get this move. I know he isn’t even on the 40 man roster, but do the Rockies really need infield depth at CS? Maybe so. Not sure it is tied to another deal as Wayne wondered, but don’t really know the reason behind it.
Fields and Jacobs don’t seem good enough to be trade bait. It’s probably just for organizational depth.
With Joe Crede leaving the team, I read that they were thin at third base. A depth move is all this really is.
First base and third base do appear to be thinner positions in AAA, so it seems like a move to add depth, as fka Mike said.
I
The injury to Iribarren that Jack reported on Sunday night also left them a little thin at third base, too. Fields is depth at a couple positions.
Another infielder–really.I suppose the “potential”of a first round pick is still there, but isn’t this Fields 3rd or 4th team?
