Rockies put Jimenez on 15-day DL, recall Reynolds

The Colorado Rockies placed pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez on the 15-day disabled list and recalled pitcher Greg Reynolds from Triple-A Colorado Springs. He will start Saturday at Pittsburgh.

Jimenez, who has a cuticle cut on his right thumb, went on the disabled list retroactive to April 2, meaning he is eligible to be activated April 17. This is the first time in his career that Jimenez has been on the disabled list.

Jorge De La Rosa, who had been scheduled to start Saturday will instead take the mound Friday in Pittsburgh. He will have ample rest, having made his first start April 2 against the Diamondbacks.

Jimenez suffered a cut on his right thumb cuticle and missed a start in spring training. At that point, he also suffered an infection, which had to be drained. That is not the case this time. Nonetheless, Jimenez cut his right thumb cuticle before his Opening Day start Friday against the Diamondbacks and was hampered by diminished velocity and spotty control in six innings in that game when he allowed seven hits, six for extra bases, including two homers, and six runs, five earned, in the Rockies 7-6 loss in 11 innings.

Reynolds had been scheduled to start Thursday night for the Sky Sox when they open their season against Tucson. John Maine, who had been scheduled to pitch the second game of the season Friday, likely will move up and take Reynolds’ spot.

Get Maine ready in a hurry, something tells me we will need him before the June 1 deadline.

Hope UJ comes back healthy and ready to go, with 98 mph heat.

i am actually pretty happy they did this…he already had this issue once in ST and to have it again and try to rush it is bad managing…So, glad they made the tough call…Pitt is playing well, so it will be hard not having him – but i’d rather he get to 100% before he pitches again…period!

Yeah, it really stinks but is almost definitely the right move. Sounds like Jimenez just needs some time off to heal.

Oh no! Where should I send the hydrogen peroxide and neosporin?

I have confidence in G Reynolds for a couple of spot starts. He’s got a chip on his shoulder and somewhat more mature than when first brought up. Pittsburgh is a good place to start to take advantage of the humidity which helps his reportoire of pitches.

I must have been prophetic when I said in another thread (Springs rotation set) that we should hold out Reynolds in case Ubaldo can’t go. A couple of hours later, he’s up with the Rockies.

Has G. Reynolds already been added to the roster? If he isn’t starting until Saturday, why not bring up Daley in the interim to have an extra arm in the BP for the next few games?

  • Rocky Mountain High | April 6, 2011 | 2:47 pm

Reynolds is already on the 40-man roster. We simply move Jimenez to 15-day DL while putting Reynolds on the 25-man roster. We need a starter for Saturday not a bullpen arm.

That’s not really answering the question, though, as he’s asking about wed-friday, not Saturday. Daley’s also on the 40-man.

Maybe they don’t feel they need/can use Daley, want Reynolds to get settled in, and/or are leery of running into problems with quick call ups and options since there are limits on how quickly a player can be recalled the 2nd time.

The move is official and Reynolds is on the roster. Just speculation, but I think the latter of what you describe, Mike, is probably the reasoning. The bullpen is well rested after the snow out Sunday and Chacin’s good start Tuesday, so there isn’t much need at the moment and bringing up Daley for two days then sending him down limits the situations in which he could come back if needed later.

It’s time to see just what Reynolds has. The Rockies brass likes him.
With his call up this just mite answer some of the questions about him.

Instead of giving”the chief” a big new contract, the ROX should look into bionic thumb transplants.Glad no gloom and doom comments, but I feel compelled to say this has scarery similar ring to beginning of DLR’s problems last spring.

Uh oh. OK, I buy the cuticle cut explanation in that I know he really has such a cut, but the “no timetable for his return” thing has me concerned that there may be other (arm) issues there too.

Hmm, maybe they should have called Daley up after all.
