Rockies farm roundup: Wheeler homers twice in slugfest
Triple-A Colorado Springs (L, 9-1 vs. Reno, box)
Willy Taveras was 2-for-4 and drove in the Sky Sox’s only run. Josh Fields was 2-for-4 with a double. Starter Josh Muecke allowed six runs, all in the second inning and all unearned after throwing errors from Fields and Chris Nelson.
Double-A Tulsa (L, 23-10 vs. San Antonio, box)
A total of 11 home runs were hit in the game, including two by the Drillers’ Tim Wheeler and one by Thomas Field. Wheeler was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI. In five games, he’s hitting .444 with three home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored. Mike Daniel was 2-for-5 with a double, triple and two RBI. Starter Josh Sullivan, once considered a top prospect in the Rockies’ system before a series of shoulder and elbow surgeries, made his first appearance above Class A, but struggled allow 11 hits — five home runs — and nine earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Adam Jorgenson, who walked one and struck out two, was the only Drillers reliever to not allow a run.
High Class-A Modesto (W, 12-2 vs. Bakersfield, box)
Nolan Arenado was 3-for-5 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Catcher Jose Gonzalez and shortstop Carlos Martinez, the No. 8 and 9 hitters, both drove in three runs. Starting pitcher Dan Houston allowed to runs in seven innings, the longest outing by a Rockies minor leaguer this season.
Low Class-A Asheville (W, 3-1 at West Virginia, box)
Catcher Bryce Massanari was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk and is hitting .533 after four games. Russell Wilson was 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases. Helder Velazquez and Mark Tracy each drove in a run. Starting pitcher Erik Stavert, a seventh-round pick in 2009, allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out five in four innings.

I came very close to writing off Wheeler after a really unimpressive year at Modesto in a serious hitter’s league. So his start this year is very encouraging. There’s never really been any doubt about his talent, but in the early going this year that finally seems to be translating into results at the plate.
