MLBTTradeRumors.com reports that Chaz Roe, a supplemental first-round pick by the Colorado Rockies in 2005, has been designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners. Roe was traded to the Mariners in the offseason for infielder Jose Lopez. Roe, 24, is 0-5 with a 6.41 ERA for Triple-A Tacoma this season.

Roe is an example of some of the odd 40-man roster moves this club has made in recent years. He was added to the 40-man despite being a fringey prospect — to be honest, really a nonprospect. Remember that next time you hear that old refrain, “no room on the 40 man roster to do a trade” or “we didn’t have room for Alburquerque” or some such thing. Omar Quintanilla held a spot on the 40 man for ages. When he was finally cut loose, no one wanted him. Why protect assets that really have no value?

Roe was another bad draft pick or poor organizational development. He never looked like a true prospect despite his high draft position. He advanced because of his potential, never on merit. Can we buy forget the great free agents and instead break the bank for a better GM and a slightly bigger budget for players?
