Blackmon leaves game with fractured left foot

July 7, 2011 | 1:50 pm | 24

Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon suffered a fractured left foot in Thursday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. The Rockies did not announce how much time he will miss, but it will likely be several weeks.

Blackmon singled with one out in the third and inning and went first to third on a hit-and-run single by Jonathan Herrera. He left the game after sliding into third on the play and was replaced by Ty Wigginton in left field.

Blackmon hit .255 in 27 games after being recalled on June. 4

Terrible news! One thing I have learned over the years is to never ask, “What next?” because I always seem to find out really soon.

  • Freddy | July 7, 2011 | 3:16 pm

This really stinks for Blackmon he was doing a good job.

Banjar, that was really funny. Made me laugh. How true, as well. Just find the positive, focus on it. The negative we can’t bury and we talk about because it’s so prevalent. This team is a mess. It will be shake-up time, I guarantee, at the end of the season. BIG changes.

Does Wiggington become starting LF and Stewart starts at 3B I suppose?

  • Steve Foster | July 7, 2011 | 10:28 pm

That would be my guess, Huskies, at least until the All-Star Break.

“This really stinks for Blackmon he was doing a good job.”

He was? He seems to have potential and this is a tough break. However, a sub .300 OBP and slugging from your left fielder is horrible.

Mike – right on. I like Blackmon and think he has a big league future, but probably not as a starter. So how’s that upgrade vs. Fowler working out?

    Blackmon: .569 OPS, 48 RC+

    Fowler: .688 OPS, 79 RC+

Blackmon’s been awful. Fowler was having a disappointing season, so the solution was to replace him with an inferior player? I still don’t understand how anyone thinks that would help the club win more games. This continues to be more about punishing Fowler than it is about improving the ballclub.

  • egossage | July 8, 2011 | 6:06 am

    Bring up Willy T.!!! Hahaha!

  • Doc | July 8, 2011 | 7:09 am

Why is it punishment for Fowler to go to a less pressurized situation in order to get his stroke back–back as in when he returned from AAA last year? I thought the idea was for Fowler to get better not to pout.

  • Pooter | July 8, 2011 | 7:35 am

Egossage, could you really stand a lineup with Willy T and Stewart? Yuck!! BRING UP ERIC YOUNG JR. !!! ha ha ha!

  • Rich M | July 8, 2011 | 7:42 am

Doc, I think the point that Ag is making is that Fowler much like Stewart became the whipping boy for J Tracy, and in Dex’s case there were several other players on the team that were performing worse than Dex.

The MLB baseball reality is however that you can’t send them all down to AAA, so just send the ones that have remaining options. Unlike several here at ITR, I think Dex is getting the shaft from the Rockies, and for Dex’s sake I hope he tears it up somewhere else when DanO finally gets around to dumping him.

A switch hitting great fielding CF (yes better CF than Cargo IMO) – Dex remains one of my favorite Rockie players!

And Michael I really hope that you are right about the BIG changes, however history would strongly suggest otherwise. That has just not been the Monforts style of doing business – and DanO has simply been lost in clouds over the last two plus years now.

Since the Holiday and Hammel trades it has been substantially down hill for DanO and the Rockies. And remember that they were literally forced into making that Holiday trade, because there was really no other viable option.

  • egossage | July 8, 2011 | 8:01 am

It was more of a joke but I think you got that by reading your post. This is starting to just get funny.

  • progmatinee | July 8, 2011 | 8:22 am

If everybody’s awful and keeps needing these AAA stints, it tells me the people putting together this team are awful.

  • Rich M | July 8, 2011 | 9:13 am

Prog all we as fans really need to know is this (and yes I borrowed this stat from another site but it seems to be very accurate):

    Rockies record last 162 games (10′ and 11′) 75 wins – 87 losses
    Rockies record prev 162 games (09′ and 10′) 95 wins – 67 losses

That’s a 20 game spread in the “wrong” direction over the last two “seasons” of baseball, and that’s just terrible! Someone has to be accountable for that performance trend – Monforts, DanO, J Tracy or players – maybe ALL the above?

  • progmatinee | July 8, 2011 | 10:12 am

All of the above is the right answer. The players will feel the impact naturally through being cut, traded, demoted etc. I’m quite certain Jim Tracy and the coaching staff will lose their jobs. The question is does Dan O’Dowd suffer any consequences of year after year failing to see adequate return for departing players.

If he continually fails to get any sort of return on players leaving the system (FA, trades, or being released) then he better make sure the players he is drafting or bringing into the system are good enough to replenish those that are leaving.

Has that happened? Dan O’Dowd gets a lot of credit for Tulo and Cargo, but seems to skate by on the countless mistakes.

  • Freddy | July 8, 2011 | 11:34 am

    Sign up Lou Piniella?

  • Reader f/k/a Mike | July 8, 2011 | 11:54 am

“The question is does Dan O’Dowd suffer any consequences of year after year failing to see adequate return for departing players.”

Examples? I think if you look at O’Dowd’s history, you’re going to see he does pretty well with his resources.

The place where I think O’Dowd slipped up was that this season’s plan seemed to be: “Enough players among the Smith, Stewart, Iannetta and Fowler crowd will improve enough that we gain 7-10 games on last year’s record.”

However, it would be stupid to fire him given his overall body of work. Ditto for “the coaching staff” if you are including Apodaca in that.

The “all the fans really need to know” stat is cherry-picked and is designed to make the situation look the worst–we don’t need to do that to know things have gone wrong this season. It’s not the best idea to make decisions while in hysterics.

  • Reader f/k/a Mike | July 8, 2011 | 11:55 am

Anyway, what I really came by the thread for was to see if there was news on the roster move–who replaces Blackmon on the active roster.

  • Rich M | July 8, 2011 | 12:28 pm

ok Mike now you got me fired up!

During the 2010-2011 off season DanO made trades and FA signings to bring in Paulino, J Lopez, Wigginton, Lindstrom, J Morales, Pagnozzi, Tavarez, Stiltz, and Maine.

The Rockies needed a power right handed bat in left field and a solid back of the rotation starting pitcher. Now I am not the sharpest tack in the box, however I don’t see any one on the list filling the two obvious holes on the Rockies roster heading into 2011.

And to suggest that the last two consecutive 162 game stretches is a “cherry picked” stat is absurd. 162 games is hardly a small sample size, and to ignore the trend over those two periods is just plain silly.

BTW Lindstrom was a solid deal and Wigginton could have been signed for one year (instead of two) – other than that DanO wasted his opportunities in the off season – and I don’t believe you can call that anywhere near a solid “body of work”?

  • Cub ex-patriot | July 8, 2011 | 12:28 pm

It is Cole Garner who is eligible to return because Blackmon went on the DL.

f/k/a Mike, Add Helton and you got the FISSH acronymn from earlier this season. While Helton and Smith have performed, the others obviously have not.

I am from the school that believes baseball managers get too much blame when teams go bad. That being said, this organization has never had a fiery Ozzie Guillen type of manager. Maybe it is time to try one. Who is out there that might fill that bill? With the trend toward “oldies but goodies”, how about Larry Bowa?

Here is a list of players lost with inadequate or no return, just off the top of my head. Some were simply free agents that I think at the time should have been picked up. Others I agree should not be on the team, but should have been dealt earlier or for a better return.

    Jeff Baker
    Jamie Carroll
    Kaz Matsui
    Yorvit Torrealba
    Garrett Atkins
    Brad Hawpe
    Franklin Morales
    Miguel Olivo
    LaTroy Hawkins
    Taylor Buchholz
    Joe Beimel

also I’d add Joe Koshansky and Al Alburquerque as just a couple minor league releases that didn’t set well with me.

  • progmatinee | July 8, 2011 | 2:40 pm

I’ll also add the decision to overpay for a 1 year wonder in Manny Corpas (who, btw, once his cheating was spotted and officially put on notice fell off dramaticly), instead of resigning Brian Fuentes.

While I love Cargo, I still think this team would be enormously better with Matt Holliday in the 3rd or 4th spot.
