Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki were winners in the annual Best Tools survey of National League managers conducted by Baseball America, and first baseman Todd Helton received mention.

Tulowitzki was named the NL’s Best Defensive Shortstop and Best Infield Arm in the league. Gonzalez was named the NL’s Best Outfield Arm. Helton finished third in the Best Defensive First Baseman category, with Joey Votto of the Reds finishing first and Albert Pujols of the Cardinals second.

Tulowitzki finished ahead of Jose Reyes of the Mets and Alex Gonzalez of the Braves as the Best Defensive Shortstop. Reyes and Rafael Furcal, who was traded from the Dodgers to the Cardinals last month, trailed Tulowtizki in the Best Defensive Arm category.

Gonzalez was chosen ahead of Rick Ankiel of the Nationals and Jay Bruce of the Reds for the Best Outfield Arm in the NL.

Managers could only vote for players in their league but were allowed to vote for players on their team.

In relevant news, isn’t Pomeranz supposed to be officially a Rocky today?

  • Andrew t. fisher | August 15, 2011 | 2:45 pm

@matt no, not exactly. The signing deadline was August 16 last year, so Pomeranz didn’t sign until the deadline that night. That makes Wednesday the 17th the first day he can join the organization

ok, is Albert really a better defensive 1B than Todd? I know at this stage, his hitting is better, but his defense?

    Gotcha, thanks Andrew

Pujols is an excellent defensive first baseman. Even in their primes I’d put him up against Helton, but with Todd losing quite a bit of mobility the last few years, 3rd is still pretty damn good.

thanks FKA. Sometimes a big names get preferential awards due to their offense.

Trip, Albert has more defensive ability at fielding, but I think the unanimous opinion from managers is that Todd has the best scoop on low throws.

So think about this. We have the best SS in the bigs. We have an outfielder with the best arm, and his reads on D are incredible. We have a 1B who saves at least 20 errors a season. How is this team 10 under .500?

Someone has to pay! Aside from non-tendering Spilly that is. Please DOD and Monforts, re-evaluate! Oh, and Roxs, go on one of those 12 game winning streaks. Give us a reason to avoid watching pre-season football.
