Tulo winning the award is a no-brainer. Nobody else comes close. He should also win the silver slugger award when it comes out.

I know that there are going to be some people arguing for Cargo to win it. But how could he, when for the first time the award broke the outfielders into three positions and Cargo played significant time at all three outfield positions.

Any manager with a half a brain would put Cargo in right right and stick him there. But JT put him in left, where he said he would stay all year, then moved him to center went Dexter did his AAA stint and finally to right when he realized that there is a reason why for 100+ years, all things being equal, managers have put their best outfield arms.

I am now looking at the window and saying thanks, I can work from home today. Don’t have to shovel that snow until later.

no silver slugger award this year for Tulo. That will go to Reyes in all likelihood.

You are correct Bill in that no one else comes close given the total chances, assists and overall presence. Sad part is it should have been his third except for the bias on Rollins 3 years ago…

Bill I love your passion for Cargo in right field! J Tracy out thinks himself on many things, but this Cargo to left field experiment was just a classic. If and when (two of) Wheeler, Matthes and Parker become MLB outfield boppers, just leave Cargo in right field where he belongs.

Overall fielding stats for position players for 2011 (based on fielding %) for MLB

    1b Todd Helton #1 NL, 2nd overall 3 errors
2b Mark Ellis #1 overall 3 errors (1 with Rox)
SS Tulo #1 NL, #1 overall
    3b…hummm nope
    C Iannetta #2 NL, #2 overall 3 errors
OF Cargo #6 NL 1 error, #10 overall (OF is split between RT, LT, CF this year)

Pretty good fielding % for Rox!

Who cares where Cargo plays as long as he’s out there? It’s more a of a sham the award is now split into strict positions, hurting truly versatile and often times better players like Cargo. Matt Freaking Holliday was on the nomination list for Christ sakes! lol

    Congrats Tulo!

    (good fielding stats there…thx drrockies)

Still think Tulo should get the silver slugger award. Reyes had a higher BA, but a shortstop hitting .300, 30 HR, 100+ RBI’s is almost unheard of. Not sure who votes for the silver slugger award so don’t know if east coast bias will come in. Reyes may lose some votes because of his sitting out to insure his winning the batting title. It really doesn’t matter, the only thing that counts is wins and the Rockies didn’t get enough of them.

That Tulo is some kind of defensive wiz, too bad he can’t hit in the clutch, not to mention he is a terror when the club is down by 5 or more. Move him to third, let Fields play short, or the kid at Modesto. Better yet let EY play short, the Rockies love him.

  • Mike Raysfan | November 2, 2011 | 2:48 pm

I agree with Steve. Reyes has a good shot at getting the silver slugger.

Why is it best for Gonzalez to play RF? I’ve heard playing LF in Coors is no picnic.

“The book” says to put your best outfield arm in right, mostly to limit the other team’s runners from going 1st to 3rd. It IS a bitch to play the left field gap in Coors cause it’s so huge, and that’s why Cargo’s speed plays well at home. That’s not usually the case in other parks, though, and unless you want to switch him back and forth all the time (which you don’t), you gotta pick one or the other. If we had a second strong-armed corner outfielder, like we used to have in Hawpe, it’d be no-brainer (Cargo plays left), but since we didn’t have that last year (Smith, EY: raise your arms if you can), it made things more complicated.

According to reports J Tracy said that left field was bigger than right field at Coors Field so apparently that was the reasoning for putting Cargo there. I would counter J Tracy’s reasoning on this argument with three points in that: 1. The throws to third base are much further from right field; 2. That the bounces off the score board take additional anticipation to accurately judge; and finally 3. If left field is indeed larger than right field then simply have the other two outfielders cheat slightly to left field to compensate and reduce the size impact.

Just my opinion having watched forty years of MLB, but according to the “book” you put your strongest fielding outfielder in right field.

  • Rich M | November 2, 2011 | 3:30 pm

oops, that shoud read “strongest and most accurate arm in right field”!

  • Mike Raysfan | November 2, 2011 | 4:08 pm

I understand the book but I also understand some coaches being dead set on using the cutoff man from right unless you have a super strong and accurate arm.

Have to give kudos to Bill on his first post logged on here. I doubted Tulo was going to get the Silver Slugger award and what happens today? Tulo selected for the Silver Slugger over Reyes. Nice to see that sometimes average isn’t the only stat they look at.

    This time!

    good call Bill

Thanks for the Kudos. I’d rather see us in the playoffs and I’m guessing so would Tulo.

Most of us fans thought Tulo had a sub-par year this past season and he still won those awards. Frankly his offensive stats are incredible and what he does in the field is amazing.

Most of the year the ITR posts were knocking Tulo for not getting the big hit late in the game and for the most part the posts were right. He always seemed to be trying too hard. But I think he’s, by far, the best SS in the game and perhaps one of the top 2 or 3 players in the game. Look at the SS in the playoffs. Nobody was close to Tulo. Furcal is a very good fielder but can’t hit a lick. Jeter is past his prime, Peralta and Elvis can hit but are mediocre in the field, etc. etc.

Unfortunately he and Cargo are not enough. And I don’t know if DoD is astute enough to get the missing pieces. Or if the Montforts are willing to pay for the pieces.
