How many are interested in pitching in to keep ITR going?

November 8, 2011 | 6:07 pm | 78

I wanted to start a new thread dedicated to keeping ITR going.  I know we had some discussion on the “Thank You ITR…” post, but that is more of a “thanks to the guys…” and i want this to be strictly for those interested in keeping it alive, in one form or another.  In case you haven’t heard – Steve, Jack and Tracy are calling it quits at the end of the year.  Many have proposed that we find a way to take over the site from them at years end.  I have volunteered my expertise in the IT side of things and others have mentioned “giving to the cause” to help pay for taking it over.  This post is an extension of that discussion.

In reading over your posts, it seems to me that there are many of you willing to pitch in to keep the site alive, if it is something that is possible.  I will offer my technological expertise in that endeavor, as well as my writing skills, to keep it going creatively; but, there are several things we need to figure out before that happens.

Would you be willing to pitch in some money to take over the site?

Would you be willing to donate money (not much i’d think) to pay the monthly costs that aren’t covered by ad’s.  I personally think the Ad’s would cover the cost of IT (hosting, etc.), but there might be a bit of distance between the two that i can’t afford myself.

Would those of you that are regular readers/posters (and can string a coherent sentence together), be willing to take over sections of the site as far as updating goes?  I like the idea of having weekly or monthly pieces like, “Prog’s Thoughts” and “Ed the Ump’s Insights”, etc…

I really need to get a pulse from each of you, because this would be a big undertaking and something that I can’t hear 50 “yes, let’s do it – I’d pitch in”, but when it comes down to it only 4 people really do…i LOVE this site and have really enjoyed each of your comments over the years.  I personally want to do what it takes to not let it end, but know i can’t do it alone.  Oh how i wish i could just write them a check and take it over tomorrow!

So, let me know what you guys think…i’m all ears.

Ping me, please, I manage a handful of servers on which we could host ITR

  • EdtheUmp | November 8, 2011 | 7:32 pm

    jaredean…

I think we might be on our way!

I’m in for a reasonable amount of money…say a one-time “kick in” of $50 and an additional $10 per month…don’t know how many others can and/or are willing to match that.

The key to the entire scenario, to me, is simple. Does my
“donation” do any good? Do we need more that that from contributors?

After checking in a little more detail on the PR blog I am of the opinion that “saving” ITR is preferable than all of us departing for another site.

I am also willing to “author” a piece on a somewhat regular basis if the “regulars” here think I am worthy.(I am attending spring training for the entire season and could possibly give a daily game report for all the home games.) I also attend around 65-70 games at Coors Field so could give an up close and personal viewpoint. I’m retired so I have plenty of time, also a bum knee keeps me off the golf course so that time is freed up.

Hopefully your thoughts on the posters coming through with monetary help instead of just posturing will be the key.

  • miketober | November 8, 2011 | 7:40 pm

I’m in for a “reasonable” amount. How else am I going to stay sane during the season??

  • rockymountainhigh | November 8, 2011 | 7:48 pm

Count me in to help donate to save the ITR. I like this idea of $50 kick in and $10/month. It ($10/month) sounds a little high; if we get 25 hands, then that would be $250/month. I would think that is more than enough to keep the webhosting server going. Easier to collect on an annual basis than on a monthly basis.

When we get the revived ITR up and running, maybe we could copy/paste articles from Purple Row with their permission to get us started until we find our own resident columnists. I would hope Andrew Fisher would be more than glad to put his daily articles on both PR and ITR.

Hey im all for chipping in to help save the site I like Ed’s idea 50 upfront 10 a month. Whatever anyone can give to keep the site going is what matters 5 bucks is better then nothing. As for my writing skills im terrible plus im in Arizona and honestly cant stand watching games at Chase Field its like watching baseball in airplane hanger. But I like to post goofy things on stuff I see during the games sometimes being a Rockies fan the stupid stuff makes the game bearable when we have to go the bullpen in the 2nd. But im all for pitching in to help.. If you need to contact me with any details e-mail me at Tonyg8@aol.com Thanks Anthony

  • jaredean | November 8, 2011 | 7:53 pm

i like what i’m hearing so far…especially the “report from the front lines”…i expressed an interest to steve on having a section on the site where those at the games could easily post pics and thoughts about what is going on, as well as those watching from home/work and have it be more of a live experience…we’ve had something similar with the “line-up” posts, that had comments of posters as they watched the game – i’d like to have something up front and center during the game with a stream of images and thoughts during the game…i think that would be very cool…

Doug, thanks for your offer…i’ll hit you up as i get closer to seeing if we have enough interest in taking it over…i have a few servers as well, two at my house on a 30/30 line that should suffice, as well as several others i manage…but, i’m always interested in having other options.

  • jaredean | November 8, 2011 | 7:54 pm

i’m sure RMH that he would love for us to do that – for a fee :-)

  • AG | November 8, 2011 | 8:03 pm

  • Julian | November 8, 2011 | 11:03 pm

I’m certainly willing to contribute along the lines suggested by others: $50 upfront and $10 per month. Also, if we became a site that needed advertising, maybe I’d pay for an ad for my business law firm. I wonder if we could get content from the journalists who follow the Rockies’ minor league teams. I always enjoy reading about the younger players.

  • Ryan | November 9, 2011 | 5:35 am

I would be willing to contribute as well.

  • GARY | November 9, 2011 | 6:04 am

Damn it,my long post didn’t post again.Briefly, the website maintenance etc.should be addressed before money collection. Also as a senior citizen, vietnam vet, about to lose his home, the $170/year being bandied about here is way out of my league. To me that idea freezes many out,and borders on becoming a snobby clique or snooty club.[which I know as a 3 year poster here is certainly not the case].

  • progmatinee | November 9, 2011 | 7:07 am

Just want to say access to the “Prog Thoughts” column is an added premium….

    Just kidding!

I am willing to kick in something, but I too think $170 a year is pushing it unfortunately.

I can’t say I have a context to know what the costs would be per year, but for a site with hardly any pictures and bandwidth needs it shouldn’t be that expensive for data storage, etc. There aren’t really security needs…etc.

I think $40-$50 a year is more reasonable for me…

  • progmatinee | November 9, 2011 | 7:14 am

Oh yeah…and I’d prefer that access to the site itself be free to attract new posters and readers. Perhaps the fee can be paid by the most frequent visitors/contributors which would maybe give them access to creating monthly, weekly columns that are promoted with banners or something.

The normal free subscription peeps still get to post and even create threads, just without the all “flair”.

    Just spitballing.

  • EdtheUmp | November 9, 2011 | 7:23 am

    Gary and others…

the $50 plus $10/month was just what I was willing to donate…we darn sure don’t want to “freeze” anyone out.

jaredean…how about ciphering something along the lines of the Roster Report from Jack that Steve suggested we donate $25. That sounds reasonable…IF, and I repeat, IF we were to get 20 posters at $25 per year to kick in, giving us a total of $500, would that be in the ballpark or way, way too little?

As I posted yesterday, I have no clue regarding site maintainance fees and all the other intangibles that are over my head.

Additionally, something that I could do every morning(or almost every morning)would be to cut and paste articles from the Rox minor league cities if that is allowed by those newspapers.

I really like the way this appears to be coming together although it may be a bit premature to get my hopes way up.

Let’s all keep brainstorming…nothing bad can come from “talking.”

  • konaman | November 9, 2011 | 8:08 am

First, the business of keeping ITR going we need to know all costs. Then we can come up with a “donation” bucket. By no means should we keep fans away because they can’t contribute. Perhaps Steve could give us a ballpark figure to purchase and then a yearly cost figure. That way we would know if it is possible or just a dream. I personally don’t attend many games as I live in Eagle County but this site keeps me in the game as if I were there.

  • Ike | November 9, 2011 | 8:09 am

Web hosting for this size site should be free or near free. The domain name which needs to be renewed by February is $20 per year at most. If content is created without charge, there shouldn’t be much monetary requirements once the initial fee is paid. That said, we all seem to like the look / feel and there is name recognition. Which to me is probably worth a nickel or two.

Has anyone found out what Steve wants for the site? Would he be willing to simply just keep it going without official participation if we covered the current costs and elected an acceptable moderator / board?

I think it would be kind of cool to just roll this thing forward. I would be totally in for both a one-time and a monthly fee. Perhaps enough could be collected to get the occasional paid content, available only to “members”.

If this thing is serious, we should elect a board of at least two (president and treasurer) to move forward. That way we are not all trying to do the same thing in different ways.

  • Rich M | November 9, 2011 | 8:18 am

Just drop my Netflix yesterday that was burning up $8 per month, so that feels like a good number for me. Sell my now useless PS3 on eBay and I am so there. Just saying that maybe a one time $100 fee to buy the site and a $8 per month maintenance fee would be likely to get this done. I would still like to think that we can get 50 regulars to participate in the restructured ITR.

I also contacted Purple Row by email on Monday about creating a space for us over there, and to be honest they have not responded as yet. Putting that together with Andrew T Fisher’s comments, I am getting the vibe from both PR and ITR that that may not be the best way to go.

Has anyone else heard back from Steve as to the cost to buy the site, as I have not heard from that direction either.

And if Prog gets his own regular column then I sure as heck deserve one as well, mostly because I am right more often than he is. Almost just kidding!

  • Wayne | November 9, 2011 | 9:21 am

Gary, sorry to hear about your house. I lost mine in June. Best thing about renting, from an old persons point of view, is I haven’t had to shovel snow (or mow the lawn).

I’m with Gary on this. I would much rather see a “contribute what you can” because $170 would keep me out. Hell, I couldn’t even come up with the $25 this year for ITR but I was planning on that for 2012. So count me in for $25 and more if I can find a job.

I would also think that knowing the costs going in would be a good idea to determine the minimum donation amount.

  • Doc | November 9, 2011 | 9:36 am

Count me in for the $50 +, but it’s sure frustrating when we don’t have any facts and figures to work with. I’d hope to get some solid info from Steve as to retaining ITR but in the meantime I think we need to go ahead as if we’re starting from scratch. Maybe Jaredean could come up with some sort of start up and anticipated maintenance costs so that we can see how much $$ we’ll need. I’m sure some of us can contribute more than others, so once we have a target amount I’m confident we can work the finances out.

  • progmatinee | November 9, 2011 | 10:44 am

Rich M, being right more often then me is like saying you’re breathing without thinking about it. Its not that impressive.

  • AG | November 9, 2011 | 11:23 am

I look at this way every dollar counts its like when you back a canidate during election season sure you have big shots who can afford that 17,000 dollar plate fundraiser then theres the real world where people like us spare what we can for what we beleive in.. We all like the site and if you give 1 or 50 dollars it all goes to the cause. So open up your wallets brothers and sisters!!! Like I said I like to have fun. So lets do this. Jared get us the numbers and we’ll get it done!

  • jaredean | November 9, 2011 | 11:30 am

I’ve been in talks with Steve (how “Hot Stoveish”) on what it would take, not only monetarily but also the time it would take to keep this site up and running. He’s asked me to keep the conversation confidential, so the specifics of costs and things aren’t mine to divulge – but the general discussion has mostly centered around making sure the spirit of the site is kept intact as well as making sure it doesn’t fall into disrepair – something that would reflect poorly upon the original group that started it. It has been a labor of love for the past 3 years and he, rightfully so, does not want it to become an occasionally updated site that peters out over the years and is seen as a dead location…that would really look bad and be, in my opinion, disrespectful to them. I know many of us, myself included, would never want to see that either.

So, it isn’t just the money. Yes, it would take money to buy the domain/site from them – but the bigger picture is time…do we have the time to really put into it to make keep it the site that it is now, as well as improving it over the years? I personally know that I would love to put what time I had into it, but the hours per day/week commitment he is talking about are beyond what I could do myself unless it did bring in enough money that I could cut back on some side work I do and just focus on the site. Bit of a what-if scenario, to be sure.

And that is where we are at. I am very encouraged by those of you that are also willing to keep it going with a financial donation, but I have always felt along the lines of Ed, konaman, etc. when they say that they don’t want it to become a locked out site to all but those that pay. I’ve never pictured that, as I’m sure each of you agrees. We need to make sure that no matter where the conversation lands, that it is accessible to all – yes, even the occasional Giants fan…

What if we did something on a site like Tumblr? It would be more of a blog than a news site, but could be added to by several. I don’t know about the facebook group personally, although that is an option. I prefer it to be more “rockies” branded and still pay homage to ITR if it is somewhere else. I could design and setup the site and then several of us could contribute. I wouldn’t mind that route either, because it would have less pressure on the main contributors – those being in charge of keeping it fresh and updated daily…

I’m not giving up on buying ITR and moving forward with it, but still want other options explored with your ideas and input.

  • rox4brains | November 9, 2011 | 11:50 am

“What if we did something on a site like Tumblr? It would be more of a blog than a news site, but could be added to by several.”

Tumblr’s easy and free…very customizable. Here’s something I threw together in 5 minutes (I stole the artwork from this site…sorry Steve). I wrote a faux story.

    http://insidetherockies.tumblr.com/

  • progmatinee | November 9, 2011 | 12:16 pm

    thats great…..lol Steve.

If its as easy as that, that might be the way to go.

  • rox4brains | November 9, 2011 | 12:39 pm

As jaredean says regular contributors could have access to writing the stories and comment sections/features can also be added so anyone could interact to those. Links to other sites can be added. I’m sure jaredean knows more about it than I. (I keep a goofy little food blog on Tumblr)

Also, I never did express my thanks to Steve, Tracy and Jack for this wonderful site and resulting community. So thanks! Best wishes to your future endeavors gentlemen.

(btw, I’ll take that sample site down in a few days)

  • rox4brains | November 9, 2011 | 12:49 pm

Fwiw, Tumblr is probably not as feature rich as WordPress (used here), but I guess you guys need to figure out what ya all would want in the longrun.

  • Rich M | November 9, 2011 | 12:49 pm

Speaking of the “hot stove” why do I feel like we have the Yankees wish list and the Rockies budget here?

  • Wayne | November 9, 2011 | 1:17 pm

LOL rox4brains. Absolutely spot on perfect (“Walker and Bichette can hit better than Wiggington in the clutch last year”).

Let’s keep the old KISS formula in mind. “Keep It Simple Stupid”. That way we can stay away from the Yankee wish list and Rockies budget as Rich M put it.

  • jaredean | November 9, 2011 | 3:50 pm

ha! yeah, we might be looking at it that way (NY dreams / COL budget)…i don’t think the Tumblr way would be perfect, in that it is more “blogish” than this site is for sure…just a single stream of consciousness on a page…whereas this format (wordpress) tends to have a lot more configuration – allowing you to present it more like news than a facebook/blog stream…it is a matter of preference of course…it would just be extremely simple to use…

  • Jim | November 9, 2011 | 4:31 pm

Reading the thread it appears to me that $ or identifying a server is not the big issue. The 50/10 proposal is reasonable for most but perhaps it should be suggested and voluntary. I think is is wrong to shut out some folks for a few $. I think the two larger issues are content and organization. The current contributors have insight into the Rockies that few, if any of us, have. I am not too interested in just reading blogs from public input. My wife and I attend all the spring training and home games, but all we have is a bunch of opinions. Also, if this venture is to succeed, there there must be some entity to step forward and take on the challenge of pulling this thing together.

It is not too far away that pitchers and catchers show up. AIN’T IT A SHAME THE SEASON IS SO SHORT!!

  • Rocky Mountain High | November 9, 2011 | 4:42 pm

I just “Bing”ed WordPress to give me a general picture; WordPress is very easy to use (I have run my own website through Yahoo email subscription or something like that long time ago and it is really easy.) So I take their word that it is easy to set up WordPress. Then I checked out one server hosting at random from WordPress list of web hosts. This sample I clicked on was DreamHost Web Hosting; says on their home page that it is WordPress optimized web hosting service; says 2-week free trial and $8.95/month with “cancel anytime” claim. I would read the fine print before I select Dream Host.

It got me “excited” that I can really help out. I’m sure there are many people that are willing to start up the new ITR website. I would love to do it myself. If it is similar to my fantasy football web that I run as a commish, it takes time only initially to get it started and very little time afterwards. Whomever we choose (if we go this route) can easily cover the monthly fees. $9/month (without further research as far as I can see) meaning we only need $20 or so annual donations to keep it going.

What you guys think of setting up the new ITR ourselves?

  • Rocky Mountain High | November 9, 2011 | 4:50 pm

The more I think about it; the more I’m willing to fill in Steve’s shoes hosting the WordPress website “permanently” and setting up the new ITR. I feel secure in the fact that we can cancel it anytime (no two year cell phone-like contracts) that we won’t lose anything. Sounds like the safe and easy way to try this route while keeping as much feel of the original ITR.

  • Rocky Mountain High | November 9, 2011 | 4:53 pm

Forgot to add this link if you want to check out a sample web hosting service.

    http://dreamhost.com/

  • jaredean | November 9, 2011 | 5:00 pm

Jim, while i agree with you (that they had insight that we don’t), i also feel that a major benifit of this site came from each of us doing what we are doing now – commenting on a post…nobody on here has the insight they have, to my knowledge, so we would miss out on that – but i don’t believe they will go 100% dark on all of us – i think they might just become “fans” again and post comments along with the group…so, that leaves the starting of topics/items.

Obviously the daily line-up is simple and can be done by pretty much anyone…the post-game wrap-ups are a bit more, given that the person that does them needs to at least watch the game and report what happened, as objectively as possible, for the group.

The other items on the site (farm report, etc.) do tend to be the ones that will miss the insight of each of them.

So, the site obviously would change by the very nature of the new direction it must take – one that is run by us, the rabid fans, and i count you as one of those fans – having gone to each spring training and all of the home games give you an insight that many of us wouldn’t have. I love when someone posts on the “line-up” stream, “hey, i’m at the game and i’m watching so and so pitch and it looks like they are really laboring to me”, etc…

So, while their expertise will be missed, the collective input from everyone here has great value to me and i think to many. I love many of the regular posters on this site and recognize that while Steve did run it, he wasn’t every third comment in every single post…he put the information out there and let us shape the direction it went in…

  • Rocky Mountain High | November 9, 2011 | 5:07 pm

Right on, Jaredean – we can’t expect the articles and other “inside” reports from professionals to be present on the new ITR. Our main goal is to keep our small community together and yet still be open to new bloggers (that doesn’t just blab blab over nothing with profanities). From what I’ve seen over the years, we are capable of writing up good articles ourselves. And of course game time lineups will always be blog starters.

  • robba | November 9, 2011 | 5:21 pm

I am really against hijacking the site, the ITR name and logo, or anything else. It belongs to Steve, and if we want to use it, we need to buy it from him.

That said, I’m in for whatever $$ is decided upon. I hope we can get enough $$ from those who can afford it, and leave the site open to everyone who wants to participate, regardless of donor status. Gary and Wayne are valued contributors, as are others in similar situations, and I sure don’t want to freeze them out.

Will look forward to Jaredean’s updates regarding negotiations with Steve, and hope he, or someone else, can come up with a budget for operating expenses.

    Drive on. It’s worth saving.

  • jaredean | November 9, 2011 | 6:04 pm

i don’t think anyone is talking about hi-jacking it…we have 2 options (well, 3 actually – but the 3rd option is to just go our separate ways)…first option, purchase the site from them and continue it. second option, move everyone over to a new location. steve said he would work with us on either option we chose.

  • Mike Raysfan | November 9, 2011 | 6:04 pm

yep, count me in. I’m open to any reasonable amount agreed on.

  • Mike Raysfan | November 9, 2011 | 6:12 pm

jardean, I know Marc Stout visits this site and occasionally posts. Maybe he could be contacted and asked to be an “inside” contributor as time allows for him???

    Just a thought.

  • Bill | November 9, 2011 | 6:30 pm

I would be more than willing to contribute some $ to keeping the ITR site going. Not sure what I can afford at any given moment nor do I know how much time I would have to contribute. There are times when I’m devoting 15 hours a day to my business. I would like to relax and read ITR but not always contribute. I’m sure that’s the same with most of you.

When you guys starting talking technical you lose me but I would hope that we can keep the same format going and hopefully right here. I know that the cost of the website shouldn’t be prohibitive but the time, effort and talent in maintaining it is something else. I have a website for my business which my son maintains for me. Whenever I ask him to show me how I can make changes he looks at me like, “no way you can figure this out Dad”.

But count me in if the cost is reasonable. I really don’t want to end up going to sites and blogs where everybody just shouts and screams.

  • egossage | November 9, 2011 | 7:14 pm

Hey guys I created a free site on WordPress. Maybe we can do something like this. We can keep it similar to this site. Keep in mind that this a very rough draft. With a little time and playing around with it we can make it look real professional. Let me know what you think.

    http://rockieshomer.wordpress.com/

  • jimboelrod | November 9, 2011 | 7:16 pm

I don’t post often on this site, but I read it daily. I have enjoyed very much the content offered by Steve, jack, and Tracy, however I also have enjoyed reading everyone else’s posts. It is nice in this day to read some comments without all the vitriol you get from some other sites.
As a Rox fan living in Utah this site is my lifeline to all things Rockies.

  • Jaredean | November 9, 2011 | 8:13 pm

    What part of Utah jimboelrod?

  • GARY | November 10, 2011 | 5:28 am

Egossage, wow impressed, makes me feel the fool that sometimes I can’t even get my posts to come up on this site.I like your/RMH’s efforts, and ideas for mainly blog, free type sites.I thank all for taking my “devils advocate”post of last night in the vein it was intended, simply arguing that a group as diverse as ITR should remain as open to all.And Rox4brains your site was priceless, and proves we have enough talent to keep the jist of this site together, and free for all.Even without official input,at least initially,I believe this can be done. All you posters with working brain cells keep spitballing and a solution will be found.FYI,as someone who ran his own screenprint/t-shirt operation,be very careful about using Rockies/ITR/MLB logos etc.due to copyright protections!!!!!!

  • EdtheUmp | November 10, 2011 | 8:08 am

egossage…and all other readers and posters…

    ego…you did it!!

For what it’s worth the “sample” you linked is absolutely perfect.

Please, all you posters(especially the “mega” posters), click on the link and check it out.

I even like the name…a buddy uses this “hosting site” if that’s what they’re called, and it works perfect.

Let’s hear from you guys after checking it out.

  • EdtheUmp | November 10, 2011 | 8:23 am

    What about eblogger?

I tried it when I contemplated writing a political blog.

I set it up and found it was beyond easy.

Rockies Prospects and Futures is an eblogger site…google that and take a look.

  • Wayne | November 10, 2011 | 8:52 am

egossage, I like the sample site you set up. Would the comments and ability to start a thread work the same on the “sample” as it does here. This site is very easy and simple. Good job.

  • Miketober | November 10, 2011 | 8:56 am

    Very nice egossage!

I like how we all voted similar on the poll. LOL.

  • egossage | November 10, 2011 | 9:31 am

Yeah Goose is fine! Wayne I’m trying to figure that out right now. I’m just kind of screwing around with it at the moment.

  • Wayne | November 10, 2011 | 9:43 am

Thanks “Goose” (I like it). I keep checking back for updates. Keep up the good work.

Steve, can you tell me what “theme” you used for this site? Everyone is just used to this layout and I’m trying to keep it somewhat similar to here.

    Thanks!

  • egossage | November 10, 2011 | 10:14 am

Also Steve, how can you create a spot sort of like “whaddya think” where everyone can post?

    Thanks again!

  • AG | November 10, 2011 | 10:47 am

I like it too spend a few hours working on the layout and were good. Plus its Free!!! And who doesn’t like free stuff.

  • rox4brains | November 10, 2011 | 10:52 am

That looks great! Thinks it’s smart to stick with WordPress since everyone is familiar with the format. I have some photos of Coors Field I’d kindly lend for the header if needed.

Egossage and rox4brains- can you guys get a hold of me throug e-mail (zeekraintree at g mail) – i’ve been working with Steve on things and would like to pool our efforts to make the best possible option…i’ll bring you up to speed…

  • Steve Foster | November 10, 2011 | 12:22 pm

EG, the theme for this site is a custom theme that I built from scratch. Creating a block like the Whaddya Think? is using a php code that selects just a single category of posts. Using a WordPress-hosted site significantly limits the customization for the site. I don’t believe it gives you access to the site templates as I have with a self-hosted site, so I doubt you’ll be able to create that sort of section without using a WordPress plugin that might do so. There may be something that allows you list most recent posts of a specific category in a sidebar widget.

There are a number of suggestions here, some of which I have discussed by email with a few people, from using Facebook to using Tumblr to using a free WordPress blog. All are great options and if the core group here can settle on one approach, we’ll be happy to point there when our time with ITR is done. I would ask that you not use the Inside The Rockies name or logo, as we did put a lot of effort into building those as a brand and an identity. If you would like to use them, talk to me offline and we can discuss. But you’re welcome to use a name that reflects the site is for the alumnae of ITR.

For what it’s worth, I believe WordPress and Tumblr are your best options if you don’t want to use a Facebook group.

I like the way the threading of posts is working in WordPress. Tumblr seemed like reading a twitter feed.

  • egossage | November 10, 2011 | 1:23 pm

    Rox4brains,

Awesome pictures! However, I can’t use any of them. Can you email some for the header???

  • rox4brains | November 10, 2011 | 2:40 pm

Thanks. Yeah, I them them locked down from downloading (I assume that’s what you mean, you can’t access them). Where should I send them? :-)

Just want to say that you guys — Egossage, Rox4brains, Jaredean (I may be missing a few others) — are on the right track. I think using a “canned” format, at least at the start, is the way to go. That’s tumblr, wordpress, something similar. Keeps the cost and maintenance time low.

If you guys are like me, you’ll agree that the primary thing we want to save is the community. We’ve got a great bunch of loyal Rockies fans and baseball fanatics in general. We come from all different perspectives but there’s a sense of respect and community. So the key thing is to keep the group together at some new site. If that takes off, maybe a more customized approach (more time, more money) is doable. I’m willing to pitch in too, but to be honest, people tend to drift away when we’re talking about monthly or even annual membership/donation/maintenance fees. So I’m for getting our little community to move over to something cheap and simple — call it a group blog if you want — to preserve what Steve, Jack, and Tracy built here, and to maybe expand on it if we hit critical mass at the new site.

I’ll repeat again that the foxsports forums offer pretty much the basic functionality we need at zero cost. We can have a series thread for each series, roster threads, minor league update threads, topical threads that anyone can start (kind of like “Whaddya Think”), etc. We could always move over there, even short term, while we try to settle on a more permanent location. Just google “foxsports forums Rockies” I won’t post the link since that will delay my post as it gets spam-checked.) Last post there was 7 months ago. It’s available for us to hijack immediately. Call it Operation Occupy FoxSports!

And if Marc Stout is out there: any plans for Root Sports (which I think is still FSN with a name change) to build a Rockies community into its website? Seems like a natural thing to do to promote the team and the broadcasts, right? Root could stand to do some branding work anyway …

  • Jaredean | November 12, 2011 | 1:15 am

Agbayani, that is exactly our thoughts. We are workIng on putting up something simple and clean, and best of all it won’t cost a lot. Might need a little donation here or there if costs exceed my disposable income, but after thinking it over and working with Steve on various ideas it came down to making sure we have the great conversation rolling. I’m hoping to have something to show after thanksgiving to get your guys input. This site is up until the end of the year, so we have a little time to put it up and transition people over.

Excellent work, guys. Keep the dream alive. And thanks RMH for the Arenado update–hope the kid gets a shot this spring.

Prog, that is classic! Awesome post!

  • Rocky Mountain High | November 14, 2011 | 4:47 pm

What’s the progress on the web plans for 2012 & later? Seems like it’s come down to either buying out Steve Foster’s ITR site or going with a new WordPress site like RockiesHomer. Either way looks good to me and both keep our ITR community together.

  • Bob in WV | November 14, 2011 | 5:18 pm

I haven’t weighed in yet as I have been totally despondant over my beloved Nittany Lions and that awful situation. (I was at the game this weekend.) Just as I’m coming around I find out that ITR is going away. My world is imploding!

Guys, I really love the ITR website. It is my first source the morning after a game. While the content was great and we picked up a lot of info not found elsewhere, it is the discussions that I really came here for. You are not just true Rockies fans, but true baseball fans. The discussions here have been informative, thought-provoking, and definitely entertaining. Kudos to everyone for keeping it that way and never letting it turn into the trash-talking nonsense found elsewhere.

Wherever we end up, I pledge to support the site as best I can. I suggest keeping the site as cheap as possible to encourage more membership. Good luck in your endevour.

why not just call it “The Rockies Report”

  • TJ in Phoenix | November 22, 2011 | 11:02 am

Hey all….I don’t post a lot here, but I do visit daily during the season and at least 2 times a week during the off season. I think AG posted above that he’s in AZ as well and from someone out of state (but grew up in Fort Collins), I love being able to visit here. I’ll be happy to contribute. I’d love to write a piece or two, but with a house full of kids, it could be tough…how about there’s a weekly “guest Column” from all of us (or a sample of us so we share the load?? (like rotated among 4-6 of us so its once a month, that I could do)…just a thought.

I want to say this though, I found this site right after the Rocky Mountain News shut down and Tracy R. came here. From the very first day its been intelligent, classy, and informative. What I REALLY like about it is all my fellow Rockies fans who show class and maturity with their posts. Posts are almost always insightful and aren’t just “F***ING #&%$(#& &$(#&*( Rockies you suck!!” and there’s no attacking each other—a nice change of civility!

That being said…..what is the first day the team reports to Salt River fields?? I’m already planning on ditching work to come over (I’m 10 mins away!)for those of you in AZ or who will be here—-WHO’S WITH ME!!!!???

    GO ROCKIES!
