In a must-win game, the Colorado Rockies were in position to do just that against the Philadelphia Phillies but fall after allowing a nine-run rally and leaving 14 runners on base.
The Colorado Rockies were expected to activate Aaron Cook for a Thursday start at home against the Philadelphia Phillies but will instead start Jhoulys Chacin on normal rest and push Cook back to Friday against the San Diego Padres.
Jhoulys Chacin was very good for the second straight start, and Todd Helton and Carlos Gonzalez homered as the Colorado Rockies evened their series with the Dodgers. The Rockies have a chance Sunday to win a series from the Dodgers for the first time in two years.
The Colorado Rockies didn’t muster much offense, but salvaged a win in the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks behind a brilliant performance from Jhoulys Chacin and a much-needed clean outing from the bullpen.
The Colorado Rockies were held to six singles and were shut out for the third time in their past four road games as Jhoulys Chacin returned to the rotation and gave up five runs in the fifth.
The Colorado Rockies on Tuesday recalled Jhoulys Chacin to take the rotation spot of Jeff Francis, who was placed on the disabled list Saturday and will be joined there by Taylor Buchholz.
Eric Young Jr. was recalled to take roster spot until a starter is needed Tuesday, when Jhoulys Chacin likely will take the open spot in the rotation.
Jhoulys Chacin, who struggled in two previous starts at Triple-A as he readjusted to starting after spending July in the Rockies bullpen, pitched seven shutout innings, allowed three hits, two walks and struck out six.
Chacin unlikely to take Aaron Cook’s spot in the Colorado Rockies rotation this weekend. Until then, Chris Nelson will provide an extra bat.
The Colorado Rockies haven’t found much of a market for Aaron Cook and are reportedly telling teams they aren’t trading Brad Hawpe because they need him given the uncertain health of Todd Helton.
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports the Colorado Rockies are no longer trying to acquire Jorge Cantu and are likely trade deadline sellers. But selling isn’t necessarily the same as giving up on the season.
Jhoulys Chacin and Christian Friedrich are scheduled to start Saturday at Triple-A Colorado Springs and Double-A Tulsa respectively.
